CHARACTER INFORMATION

Character Name: Mary Crawley
Canon: Downton Abbey
Canonpoint: End of S5
Character Age: 32

Background/History: WIKI HERE

Strengths:
INDEPENDENT. Mary enjoys being her own woman. She has her own opinions, which she shares, usually without expectation of impunity. For a woman born during the Victorian Era, this is rare. Granted, Mary's views aren't too outlandish, and tend to generally fall in line with the typical views of most upper class ladies of her time, but she still feels free enough to share them. Even though she loves her family and still lives with them, she makes her own choices about what she's going to do with her life.

LOYAL. She is the type of woman that one would want to have in their corner because winning her over probably means that she'll be with you until the end, or until you give her a reason not to be. Mary is extremely loyal to her family and tends to put them above everyone, even if she doesn't always like them (see: Edith). She's also loyal to the people who work for her, people who are loyal to her if you wish to put it that way. Her maid and her butler in particular are recipients of her kindness. Mary will do a lot for a person if she feels that they have earned her loyalty.

PROPER/WELL-MANNERED. Being an upper class lady of refinement, her mannerisms are impeccable. She sits with perfect posture. She sips tea daintily. She's generally polite. Her manners are very well-bred and it's obvious to anyone around her that she's someone of means. This is something that she finds to be important because it is the outer image that she projects to the world. In all things, she's poised and lady-like.

Weaknesses:
SNOBBY. Mary tends to think that she's better than everyone else. She has learned over the years to be tactful and not to portray this outright, but the feeling is definitely still there and sometimes it makes itself known in her words and actions. Often she tries to subscribe to the adage of "if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all", but sometimes responses cannot be helped.

COLD. She's conversational, but not always very friendly. Close friends are hard to come by for her. She struggles sometimes with feeling emotions and allowing herself to be vulnerable, so it's easier for her to shut people out and not try to feel anything. If she shows emotion, it can be a sign of weakness and then people can use that to hurt her. It's a self-protection measure, but it leaves her coming off as cold to others.

STUBBORN. This is a trait that could go either way, but I've decided to include it in the negative area. Mary is stubborn as the day is long. She likes to have her way and will do her absolute best to make sure that she gets it. This can include batting her eyelashes if she has to, though she's generally pretty persuasive without having to do that. Mary's not known to throw a complete hissy fit, but she will be pouty and moody if forced to go against her instinct or what she believes is the best way of doing something. Mary does not like being backed into corners and would be more likely to lash out at someone if she feels that she has been.

Fatal Flaw: Mary's fatal flaw is perhaps her vanity. While she's good at charming men, she is likewise also charmed by them. Her flirtatious nature has gotten her into trouble before (see S1's Pamuk Incident). This version of Mary is older and wiser, but she still subscribes to the notion that flattery will get someone everywhere. While I think she does have a fairly strong bullshit detector, certain people, particularly men, might be able to needle their way in and make her believe everything they tell her if they compliment her on how beautiful and clever she is.

Driving Force: Mary's driving force is her ambition, both for her and her family. She wants the best for herself, whether that's a position, a title, a man or wealth. However, she also wants it for the people that she loves. The success of her family is, by association, a success for her. She places her loyalty to them, even to her servants, above all. I wouldn't call her ruthless, but she's clever and is willing to put in work if she thinks there will be a payout.

Patron: I feel that Juno fits Mary best. Most of the personality traits align with her own. She also sees herself as the queen of her own domain back home. Even if the town she comes from is small, everyone there knows her because she's the oldest daughter of the local Earl, and she sees herself as a patron of sorts. Especially at her canon point for this game, she's working to not only increase her family's status and wealth, but the community's as well. That dovetails well with Juno's being special counselor of state. Mary's also been married and had a child, so she can speak to that role of Juno's as well (even if she's not the most maternal person in the world).

Her presence, even without powers, usually commands attention, as she sits with impeccable posture and has eyebrows that are have a deadly pointedness to them. A Mary with increased confidence and presence would be a force of nature. This would definitely help her with negotiations and navigating the political world of Ancient Rome.

GAME INFORMATION

Setting Suitability: I've looked at a lot of games on DW over the years and this one just strikes me as different. I really love the idea of it taking place in a historical setting, particularly because Mary is a historical character, even if she's not from this time period. It will take a different kind of adjusting for her in this game than it takes when I put her in modern-era type games, but I think she will fit the setting well. Any sort of physical fighting aspects will be challenging for her, as she has no experience in that area. However, the negotiation and political aspect will appeal to her. She does have a bit of experience with that and I think she would be naturally suited towards it. Her preferred battles will be those of wits, not of fists.
